thumbs up on that story Peter!!! that must have been really cool.. Gadd is a very unassuming and modest character.
Something else about
Steve is his composi-
tional approach to so-
loing. I LOVE Steve's
solos in that they are
very constructed and
almost to a fault.
I think some might ar-
gue that he repeats
himself. I can both
see and not see it.
He has his signatures.
I, myself, have been
profoundedly influenced
by his approach to it.
I saw that, night after
night, after night. I
think the other players
liked it to because he
was so easy to follow.
Just the other day, I
was playing this tune
with a band and it had
a lot of fill in it. I
could tell that when-
ever I let-go, they
would wind up coming
in wrong, even though
I was coming in right.
I knew that there was
only one way to get
through this and it
wasn't by just doing
what I wanted to do.
It was by meeting the
guys/gals half-way.
I played half of the
phrase my way and the
second half, with a
16th-note lead-in.
Everyone was there
for it. You gotta'
do that sometimes.
Instead of being the
"baddest" drummer, you
have to be the "Gadd-
est" drummer!
OK. I'll shut up!

And THAT, sir, is EXACTLY why a lot of drummers [esp really younger ones] miss the boat on understanding Gadd's incomparable contributions to drumming/music...he is legendary, and i do mean LEGENDARY, in drum and music circles...he has that Groove that just makes you sink back in your chair, sippin on a cold frosty, & make u gotta go, "ahhhh" [& wanting for a "York Peppermint Pattie" ]....
I'm glad so many of
you liked the story
and that it moved you.
I was asked to write
down any other things
that I might remember
him saying about play-
ing or observations
that I had made during
that time.
I'll try and 'drum' some
of these up.
One of my favorite things
that he said was:
"If it sounds right, it is right."
Another one was:
"Let the music dictate the drum part."
One of the first things
I noticed about him was
how he moved, while he
played. He would bob his
head up and down. I under-
stood this to help him get
into the groove. I think
that some drummers will
disagree with the idea
but I couldn't help be-
ing impressionable and
so I picked it up. He was
a dancer and it made
sense to me.
I'm not sorry I did.
If I remember more, I'll try
and jot them down for you.
Like I said before, he's the
nicest drummer I have ever
met or known.

Good point about him bobbing his head....I feel that a lot of the natural aspects of the performance of music(namely drumming)is lost to this rhetoric that we must be completely squared and symmetrical...Let's not waste any energy! I think it is complete and utter B.S....Tell Gadd that he was wasting energy while giving us some of the most memorable performances...EVER!
